A takeaway driver who was discovered delivering hot food alongside a ‘bouquet of dead pheasants’ in his car boot was reported to environmental health by Derbyshire Constabulary.

Officers intercepted the Citroen car on Saturday night after it was spotted leaving a local takeaway restaurant and making a right turn without indicating.

Police found the man was driving around without the correct insurance and later made the shocking discovery of the dead birds alongside the food he was delivering to customers.

After being pulled over by the force’s Safer Neighbourhood Team, the driver was issued a summons for the traffic offences and the vehicle was loaded onto a recovery truck to be delivered to the local impound.

It was only when officers looked through the window of the car that they say the ‘bouquet’ of dead pheasants in the boot.

Officers subsequently issued a report to local environmental health officers at South Derbyshire District Council.

In a post on Facebook, officers said they removed a risk from the road because if the man was involved in a collision  – he would not be insured.

A spokesperson for Derbyshire Constabulary posted on the Safer Neighbourhood Team’s social media page: ‘If you waited just a bit longer than expected for your Saturday night takeaway last night, it is probably because your Safer Neighbourhood Team (SNT) intercepted your delivery driver.

‘Officers observed a Citroen car driving away from a local takeaway restaurant this evening, making a right turn at a roundabout but failing to use the complimentary indicators provided on the vehicle.

‘On the menu for the driver was a summons for the traffic offences and the vehicle was loaded onto a recovery vehicle to be delivered to the local impound.

‘And hot food was not the only thing on the menu – the officers were clearly hungry for more and when they looked through the window of the car they were shocked to see a bouquet of dead pheasants in the boot – resulting in a report being issued to environmental health officers at South Derbyshire District Council.

‘People work hard to afford their nice cars.

If this driver was involved in a road traffic collision he would not be insured.’
