New Year’s Day TV guide: Doctor Who, Harry Potter, Downton Abbey movie and more
With 2022 fast approaching and whether you’re planning to be out visiting loved ones this New Year’s Day or recovering from the night before, we’ve got some telly top picks to sink your teeth into. In January 1 tradition, there will be a grand collection of classic films to keep the little ones occupied, from A Dog’s Purpose on Channel 4 at 8.50am to Ferdinand at 1.05pm on ITV. For the movie loving grown-ups, She Wore a Yellow Ribbon will air on BBC Two at 12.40pm, Channel 5 will broadcast The Proposal at 12.45pm and at 2.20pm musical fans can catch The Sound of Music on BBC One.
James Bond lovers will be elated to know that Skyfall will air on ITV2 at 8.30pm and at 10pm, The Green Mile will be broadcast on Channel 5.
The annual New Year’s Day Concert will air on BBC Two live from Vienna, hosted by Petroc Trelawny. There will also be a 2022 message from the Archbishop of Canterbury on BBC One at 1.15pm Much-loved game shows such as Tipping Point (ITV – 3.30pm), The Chase Celebrity Special (ITV – 4.30pm) and The Hit List (BBC One – 5.30pm) will feature.
But there are also a host of other TV New Year’s Eve specials to choose from, so whether you’re a fan of comedy, drama or a game show, we’ve gathered some of the best telly set to grace your screens on January 1. Pride and Prejudice – Drama – 11am

1) Mr Darcy, a.k.a Colin Firth, will be back on our screens this New Year’s Day as all six episodes of the 1995 critically acclaimed television miniseries, will be broadcast back to back. The Weakest Link – BBC One – 6.15pm

BAFTA-award winning comedian Romesh Ranganathan will be stepping into Anne Robinson’s shoes yet again for the return of the legendary quiz show.
The New Year’s special will see radio and podcast stars bring the a-game in an attempt to bag a cash prize for charity as, one by one, beloved media personalities are voted off by their team as ‘the weakest link. The Masked Singer – ITV – 7pm

Get ready to yell “Take it off! Take it off!” at your television screens once again as The Masked Singer is back for a new series and it kicks of New Year’s Day.
A brand new cast of celebrities – disguised as Rockhopper, Robobunny, Firework, Bagpipes, Traffic Cone, Panda, Lionfish, Snow Leopard, Chandelier, Mushroom, Poodle and Doughnuts – complete with ever extravagantly elaborate costumes are set to battle it out to be crowned the best secret singer. Following an explosive season finale, Jodie Whittaker is back as the thirteenth timelord for Saturday’s New Year’s Day special. Comedian Aisling Bea, as well as Adjani Salmon and Pauline McLynn will be joining the cast of characters as they become trapped in a terrifying time loop with the ultimate enemy… the Daleks.

Paul Hollywood, Prue Leith, Noel Fielding and Matt Lucas are ready and waiting to judge four previous contestants who’ll be bringing forward their best seasonal bakes in an effort to be crowned the New Year’s Star Baker. Returning to the iconic tent will be John Jenkins and Kim-Joy Hewlett from series nine, as well as Rowan Williams and Hermine from series 11. The ‘Chosen One’ himself, Harry Potter, otherwise known as Daniel Radcliffe, and his accomplices Rupert Grint (Ron Weasley) and Emma Watson (Hermione Granger) will be celebrating 20 years since the world dominating franchise’s first instalment, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone.
Director Chris Columbus and a whole horde of other HP cast members from all eight award-winning movies films will come together to reminisce about the old days in the Wizarding World. Downton Abbey: A New Era – ITV – 8.40pm

The world’s favourite Golden Globe and Emmy-winning period drama is back with a royal, feature-length bang! When the Granthams, played by Hugh Bonneville and Elizabeth McGovern and headed by Dame Maggie Smith, receive word that the King and Queen of England are to take a visit to Downton, it throws the estate into a frenzy of preparation.
With Lady Mary bringing butler Carson out of retirement for the special occasion, the house staff clash with the royal company and the family themselves are forced to deal with their own personal intertwining dramas. The Tourist – BBC One – 9pm

In the glowing red heart of the Australian outback, a British man is pursued by a vast tank truck trying to drive him off the road. An epic cat and mouse chase unfolds and The Man – played by award-winning Irish actor Jamie Dornan – later wakes in hospital, hurt, but somehow alive… except he has no idea who he is.
It seems as though the BBC are starting as they mean to go on in their list of highly anticipated television dramas that are set to occupy the famous 9pm slot, kicking off with The Tourist. Taskmaster New Year’s Special – Channel 4 – 9pm

Smash-hit Channel 4 comedy series Taskmaster, hosted by Greg Davies, is set to make a return for an epic New Year’s Eve special episode. Greg, along with his devoted sidekick and co-host ‘Little’ Alex Horne, 43, will be welcoming a whole new host of big names – Adrian Chiles, Claudia Winkleman, Jonnie Peacock MBE, Lady Leshurr and Baroness Sayeeda Warsi – who’ll try their hand at bagging the elusive Taskmaster trophy during this standalone show.

Agnes is starting 2022 with chaos, once again… Grandad’s brother Micky is fresh out of prison and drops by the house for an unwelcome visit. The Browns are soon suspicious when he asks to borrow thousands of euro to invest in a South African goldmine.
This inspires Winnie to change the trajectory of her life as she decides to climb Mount Kilimanjaro, while the boys have a heart to heart.
