Sustainability investments announced by food firms
Cereal processor The Great British Porridge Co has introduced fully recyclable packaging across its entire range.
Set to launch this month, the new packaging has been produced using fully recyclable material and can be recycled the same way as carrier bags in the UK – at the front of stores and at high street supermarkets. Great British Porridge Co has planned a slow roll out for the new packaging, so as to avoid the current bags ending up in landfill. Co-founder Jacqueline Barleycorn said: “We are always looking for ways to reduce our impact on the environment and moving to recyclable packaging is a big part of that.
Exploring recyclable materials “We’ve spent much of 2020/21 looking at different compostable and recyclable materials and after seven material trials, we have picked the best solution for our brand and we are proud to say that we are now using 100% recyclable pouches.” The new packaging will be rolled out across all outlets, including Waitrose, Ocado and Sainsbury’s from mid-November.
In other sustainability news from food and drink businesses, premium soft drinks company Belvoir Farm has installed a solar panel roof at its Leicestershire factory and joined the Certified Sustainable initiative as part of its drive to be carbon neutral by 2030.
The installation for an array of 746 Solar Photovoltaic panels across the roof above the bottling hall will generate up to one third the company’s electricity needs and is help the business towards its goal of achieving energy independence.
Natural gas Belvoir has also replace oil with natural gas for the factory steam boiler and biogas for its forklift truck fleet, saving 40% of the carbon emitted – with plans to eventually replace this with Hydrogen. Managing director Pev Manners said: “For us, environmental responsibility, modern day farming techniques and good business practice go hand in hand, and we are thrilled to be joining the Certified Sustainable Initiative.
“This shows to all our customers, colleagues and suppliers that we are serious about recycling and managing our waste streams in the most sustainable ways, as part of our overall commitment to our shared natural environment and desire to leave our farm and the world in a better place for our children.”
Meanwhile, members of the UK dairy industry have set out a series of commitments to improve the sustainability of the sector.
