Motorway CLOSED after lorry overturns during morning rush hour
The M6 southbound has been closed after a lorry overturned. The southbound carriageway between junction 28 for Leyland and junction 27 for Wigan has been closed following a crash in which a lorry overturned and rolled down the banking next to the hard shoulder. “Traffic officers and maintenance crews are on their way to the area. “The lane one closure is likely to be on for some time while recovery takes place.” The incident occurred at around 8.45am on Wednesday.
The driver of the truck was uninjured and no other vehicles were involved in the crash. A spokesperson for the police said: “Police are at the scene of a road traffic collision on the M6 southbound Charnock Richard. “At approximately 8.45am today, an HGV left the carriageway, in the process shedding its load and necessitating a full closure of the M6 southbound J28-J27. “The driver was uninjured and no other vehicles were involved.
“This is now a Highways Agency-led incident supported by police. “The recovery and clean-up operation has commenced and it is estimated to take around two hours to complete. “The motorway is expected to reopen around 1.30pm today.
“Local diversions are in place. Check before you travel.” A further update from Highways stated: “Drivers planning to use the southbound M6 in Lancashire are being advised it has been temporarily closed for specialist vehicle recovery.
“It is expected to take at least two hours to recover a lorry after it collided with barriers and ended in the motorway verge shortly before 9am. “No one was injured in the incident, between junction 28 of the motorway at Leyland and junction 27 at Standish, but the carriageway has been closed to ensure the lorry can be safely removed as soon as possible. “The collision also resulted in extensive damage to the safety barrier in the verge and debris being scattered over the carriageway.
“National Highways traffic officers kept traffic moving past the scene of the incident but the southbound carriageway was closed at 11am to allow specialist recovery.
“It is possible that lane three of the carriageway may be re-opened once the lorry has been righted but drivers are being advised to make use of the good alternative motorway routes via the M61 from junction 30 or M65 from junction 29.
“Drivers can otherwise use a local diversion route between junction 28 and junction 27 following the hollow black square symbol along the A49.”
