Big Baps Cafe owner fuming over men meeting in woods behind
The owners of a transport cafe just off the M62 are demanding action claiming men meeting for sex in woods behind their business is bad for trade. Sharon Wherrett, 51, runs Big Baps Cafe in West Yorkshire with her sister, Amanda Bissett, 53. The owner of the business, popular with truck drivers, said she is shocked that local authorities are not doing more to clamp down on the public sex hotspot frequented by men just yards away.

However, she says she feels as though she is “banging her head against a brick wall” as she is still waiting for the authorities to take some sort of action.

Sharon claims the problem has been dismissed by police as a “political matter”. “We have been visited by two police officers,” she said. “They have said there is very little that they can do. “There has been no contact from the council.”
The mum says she has written to her local MP Craig Whittaker, as well as Calderdale Council, on numerous occasions. “When I reported it I thought they would be really shocked and would take instant action. I was really surprised that they just didn’t.”

The sisters have also been accused of homophobia since speaking out about the issue, something that both Sharon, who has a gay son, and Amanda strenuously deny.
The 51-year-old added the sisters lose customers “daily” as many men ditch their cars in the lay-by before venturing off. It means there is no room for truckers – their main clientele – to park up on their break. “People car share and it means there is not enough room for a truck,” she said. “The truckers are sick of fast food and they can’t get a good meal.”
Sharon has strong opinions on what could be done to clamp down on the issue plaguing her business.
She said: “The council could make it a clearer area. I am not saying cut all of the trees down, because I am completely against that. “But if they made a walkway, or something for cyclists, that would stop people (from going down there).
It’s because the trees are overgrown and it is so scruffy down there (that they do). “It would be a beautiful walkway if it was not for all the ‘sex mess’ and condoms. It is a lovely area by the river and I am sure it could be utilised by more of the community.”
Councillor Jane Scullion, cabinet member for regeneration and strategy at Calderdale Council, said: “Of course, we take all concerns from residents and businesses seriously, and we are working with the police and other partners to address the concerns that have been reported.”
West Yorkshire Police have been approached for comment.
