Rugeley labelled ‘the town equivalent of Ryanair’ in scathing rant
An outrageous keyboard warrior has branded their hometown as “the town equivalent of Ryanair” in a scathing online rant. The poster, who has unsurprisingly kept their identity secret, tears into the Staffordshire town of Rugeley, saying elderly people there give younger generations “death stares” as they walk by. And young people are accused of taking drugs and listening to awful music, while the town’s market also comes in for a slating.
top stories from across the Staffordshire area According to the anonymous troll, the market’s perceived problems are the fault of “Mrs Thatcher” – even though they admit to being a teenager, meaning they would have no experience of her the Iron Lady’s premiership. They also wrongly say Margaret Thatcher was in power for “nine years”, when she was, in fact, Prime Minister from May, 1979, to November, 1990.
Needless to say, we think this is a load of rubbish and we have explained why below. The people of Rugeley are down to earth and friendly, with a brilliant sense of humour – well, with the obvious exception of the individual who took to his keyboard to be horrible. The poster, trolling the whole town on ilivehere.co.uk, writes: “Ah, Rugeley – where do I start?
I have lived here all my life and it never fails to make me want to jump in front of a speeding truck. The people in Rugeley can be friendly at times, but the old people look at teenagers like myself like we are best mates with O.J Simpson. “They give us evil death stares for walking into Subway and even WH Smiths and Tesco, where they look at us like we are planning mass gang up.
“There local young population are bad or worse – they regularly hang about in the town centre doing cocaine and listening to their ‘sick beats bro’, which sound like a live ******** in a Syrian prison, although there are some generally good young people in this town … the thick majority are absolute, as they say in Essex, ‘absolute ******* mugs’ who have nothing but ‘fat zoots’ in (their) adidas jacket(s) and their intention to hold up the local kebab shop with a knife they have nicked from Tesco. “Anyway, Rugeley is the town equivalent of Ryanair.”
Why we think the blogger is talking rubbish
Rugeley Power Station was something the town will always be proud of.
What the young blogger has failed to take note of are all the things that make Rugeley a great place to live and a source of immense pride for its residents. To start with, it went down in history in 1962, when Rugeley Urban District Council made the first ever phone call via the Telstar satellite.
The chairman spoke to the Mayor of Western Springs, the Illinois town Rugeley is twinned with. Its proud agricultural heritage goes back centuries, with huge crowds flocking from all round the country for its annual horse fair. There are stunning views in the town and surrounding area, including the gorgeous Rugeley Viaduct.
Although the blogger’s information about Mrs Thatcher was misguided, she has been a hugely unpopular figure in some quarters down the years in Rugeley for closing the nation’s coal pits. Rugeley was a major centre for opencast mining from the 1950s, with the famous Lea Hall Colliery opening in the 1960s. And Rugeley Power Station – which was recently demolished – was a groundbreaking facility that took fuel directly from Lea Hall, employing thousands of people down the years.
Not only is the town’s market a great source of pride, keeping Rugeley’s artisan tradition alive, but it is home to loads of brilliant, modern shops and eateries – including Boots, Argos, Costa Coffee and McDonald’s.
