Dad and daughter ‘lucky to be alive’ after pallet smashes into windscreen
A driver and his daughter were inches from tragedy as a wooden pallet flew off a truck into their car windscreen. Simeon Adams, 51, said the pair are lucky to be alive following the incident near Hassocks last Wednesday (October 6). The Hove resident was driving along Muddleswood Road near the Ginger Fox while taking his 12-year-old daughter to school.

“The combination of this, and not having the load secured meant that all this timber lifted off the truck and flew into the air. “Then there was a sort of pause before the inevitable mighty bang as the windscreen shattered. “After I came to a stop I could see in the rear view mirror that the driver had slowed down to see what happened before driving off.”
Sussex Police has so far not been able to identify the driver who left the scene. Pictures show the true extent of damage done to the vehicle – with its windscreen shattered and a visible dent in the bonnet.

Simeon has said he is very lucky that he was driving a Land Rover, as a smaller vehicle might not have survived the impact. Following the incident, a woman whose child went to the same school offered to give his daughter a lift.
“My daughter was very shaken and cried hysterically,” he added. “It was only when I got her into the Good Samaritans car I fully saw the extent of the damage. “The windscreen looks like it has two bullet holes in it.

“It’s completely shattered and the bonnet has a massive dent in it..
“My physics isn’t great but if you think of the speed he was going at it’s like a pallet flying straight towards your head at 100mph. “It could have ended very differently “If it had hit just a slightly different part of the windscreen we would have been goners.
“The bonnet took some of the force out of the pallet.
I think if it solely hit the windscreen it would have come through and killed us, I’m sure.”
